Three

This will be a complete shade bed, but as it is on the outside of our fenced area, the "deer" side of the property, it has to be planted with inedible shrubs and plants. Karen already has a list of prospects which we will be buying over the next week, before that of course, I have to remove the last few yards of green stuff, and we need to find some rocks.

Two and a bit

Time to salvage some rocks for the border, but for now, the bed is complete and almost planted. We learned in Gibsons how things grow and take up a lot of space, so this time, we're attempting to place plants so they will grow into the bed over the next few years.

Part Two

It is a crusade, this removal of the green stuff, which really serves no purpose, just an incubator for dandelions and other weeds. In Gibsons we created a large full sun bed, and here in Sooke, the lay of the land in the front yard says that another similar bed is in order. The one thing we have to be careful of when planting this new bed are the large amount of deer that pass by the house each day, we do not want to create a tasty buffet for them.

Less Grass, Part One and a bit

Plants have been planted, this was all Karen's work, I do the digging and turf removal, Karen makes things beautiful. In addition, since this photo was taken, a few of her favorites, hosters, have been installed.

Less Grass, Part One

There has been a lot going on lately and to keep our minds busy in other ways, the projects in the garden are starting. This first effort measures five by twenty-one feet, for a total of one hundred and five square feet of grass that is now residing in the compost area and will never need mowing again.

A good few hours graft from the pair of us was required, and the reward, of course, was a beer or three and yesterday, some very special honey mead from Tugwell Creek Meadery just a few kilometers down the road from our home town of Sooke.

In the next day or so, top soil and alder mulch will be delivered, and we'll be at it again to get this area ready for planting.
